Chester Ronning Centre: For many centuries in the Western academy, Muslims and their faith were the objects of study. Islam was treated as a religious or civilizational rival, or, as an unenlightened tradition that would inexorably succumb to and be absorbed in modernity. Then the objects of study came to life. In this lecture, Ingrid Mattson will discuss how the academic study of Islam and the living tradition of Islam can be mutually enriching, as well as beneficial for society. Ingrid Mattson is the London and Windsor Community Chair in Islamic Studies at Huron University College at Western University in Canada.
